About

Both the National Energy Policy and National Academy of Engineering’s (NAE) Grand Challenges for Engineering identify built environment and its infrastructure as the focus for impactful action. In response, the Center for SustainabilITY in the Built Environment was established at the University of Maryland (CITY@UMD) to create strategic collaborative research and education efforts among different colleges/schools in order to address critical water, energy, and environmental challenges of the built environment. Overall, the Center’s mission is to understand the fundamental principles of built infrastructure’s impact on energy/water consumption, environmental quality, and human well-being. This understanding enables the creation and management of sustainable built environment through engagement, outreach and technology transfer to partners/stakeholders.
